Milton Keynes Dons progressed through to the Second Round of the FA Youth Cup with a powerful showing in a 2-0 win at home to Kidderminster Harriers.
Mike Dove's team were always in control of the game, with the only worry being netting the second goal, which would have made the tie safe. The West Midland side nearly gifted the Dons the lead on five minutes when centre-half Danny Hodnett nearly headed into his own net, the ball beating his keeper but clearing the crossbar. Same Page drove wide on 14 minutes after good build-up play from Nick McKoy. McKoy and Serge Makofo were clearly a class apart from their opponents, and always looked dangerous on the ball. After a spell of complete dominance from the hosts, the deadlock was finally broken when Thomas Carter latched onto a poor clearance header to drive home from the edge of the penalty area. Adam Moriarty's superb cross from the right was met by Makofo on 43 minutes, but his sliding shot fell just the wrong side of the far post. Kidderminster's only chance of the first half came on the stroke of half-time when Stephen Thompson's cross clipped the crossbar on its way over.
After the break the pattern of Dons dominance continued. McKoy and Makofo both failed to pull the trigger as a goalmouth scramble ensued on 57 minutes. And Moriarty dragged a shot wide on 18 minutes from a good position down the right channel.
Craig Ewart and Carter both went close, and Harriers defender Hodnett had to clear off his line as the pressure continued into the closing stages. At the back the Dons held firm, and the result was assured in injury-time when Makofo broke down left and squared the ball Ewart to slot home from close range.
