Despite the lack of goals this was an entertaining pre-season game in the old-fashioned game-of-two-halves mould that preserved Harriers' unbeaten summer. With games running out Harriers' trialists have been thinned out so that just two - Jon Munday and Amar Boukhalfa - remain; this line-up was one that could easily, given the injuries and suspensions already in the squad, start the Conference season against Aldershot on August 11. The League One side dominated the first half and stretched Harriers for long periods of the game. They only threatened Scott Bevan's goal once, however, Martin Butler's shot midway through the half deflected off Gavin Hurren at the expense of a corner. The early stages of the second half saw the visitors on top; in the first minute of the half Mark Creighton missed a tackle allowing butler a clear run at goal but he blasted his shot over the bar. Shortly afterwards Edrissa Sonko cut infrom the right wing but he also shot over the bar. Harriers began to get on top, however, and on the hour mark had their best chance of the game. Brian Smikle's cross from the left was played back to Michael Blackwood by Matt Barnes-Homer; Blackwood's shot was deflected but Clayton Ince in the Walsall goal got down well to save, he could only parry the ball into the path of Creighton, though, but the keeper was quick to react and saved his follow-up shot. Bevan was called into action again shortly afterwards as Butler got free of the Harriers defence but the keeper was quick off his line to avert the danger. Harriers had the last good chance of the game, Justin Richards' shot from the edge of the penalty area deflected away for a corner that they could not capitalise on. |
